An oversized cardigan in a brushed multi-stripe knit, with a high funnel collar and a single-breasted front.
The collar is what makes it. Most striped knits stop at a crew or a round neck, which leaves the stripe running flat across the chest and nowhere else to look. A funnel collar carries the stripe up the neck and gives the whole piece a vertical line it would otherwise lack.
Because it fastens at the front, it works two ways. Closed to the collar it reads as a knitted jacket and holds the wind off. Open over a top it falls into a soft wide neckline and becomes something else entirely. Most striped jumpers only do one of those.
The stripe is brushed rather than flat, so the colours blur slightly into one another instead of sitting in hard bands. That is the difference between this and a deckchair.
Cut generously through the body and the sleeve, long enough to wear over a slim trouser or a straight-leg jean without needing to be tucked.
A brushed knit sheds a little through its first few wears and will pill where a bag strap sits. That is what brushing the surface costs — the softness and the shedding are the same property.
